Though I dont really agree with the O/R mapping any more i really feel the advancement that was achieved in this area.
I think that SOA and the ability to control flows with tools like Oracle BPEL Process Manager or Cordys have a much more robust and enterprise EDI centric abilities then the O/R Mapper capabilities.
Though from the programmers point of view the O/R mapping is a great change of concept and of actions.
its moving to the AS400 data ability where data is objectified right from its nature on the disk.
