About a month ago my son managed to reach the limits of elasticity as far as the digitizer was concerned. it smashed into so many little pieces that i was glad we had the screen protector, it held them in place and left the iPad operational.

So i decided to fix the iPad on my own, as an adventure, so i hopped online to look for the parts i will need. i looked around and everybody is fixing a non broken ipad with a complete digitizer. This was not very useful as i figured out later.

I ordered a new digitizer and waited to get it in the post. it reached quickly after a few days, so i started the gruesome task of opening the iPad. since i never did it before i expected it to be simple as the people explaining the process on iFixit, it isn’t so simple. my recommendations are to start with the LHS near the top or bottom corner with 2 metal openers as the plastic ones wont handle the force of the clips. also be aware that the bottom LHS is a very delicate plastic that will squish when force is applied. my take was shatter the frame just be careful of the LCD.

Another thing i noticed when trying to get the digitizer off the plastic frame was that its not easy to remove shattered glass even when heated out of a plastic frame. so be prepared to get a new frame, its better and so i did. i was ooo so exited getting the new frame out of the box, i had an open iPad with all the parts waiting to be assembled and i even bought a set of clips to put to the frame as the ones that were on the old frame just bent and broke. alas the screws are too small for the holes the frame has, something was missing.

After a short look around the internet i found 2 things that are important for the final assembly, screw nuts that go in the frame and the adhesive that holds the digitizer to it. order that and wait a week to get it.

Yesterday it all came to be, all the parts are ready and i am about to put it together with my son, and i realize the nuts are not fitting they are very hard to press in. i decided the brutal way is just what the doctor ordered and took a hammer and an elan bit to push the nuts in, it was the right way.

From that moment onwards it was just an assembly game screw the LCD then the clips and then put the adhesive in the right order stick it all up and you got the screen assembly done. the next phase is to put it all together and here comes iPad back to life.

After a month of lacking the iPads presence i have it back. it is such a nice feeling.

So what is are my lessons?

The biggest is don’t mess with apple, the way everything is tightly positioned into the packaging and the way it is assembled is to prevent you from dealing with the internals of the thing seems to be well thought out. though it is much better then an iPhone 4 situation it is still not the easiest thing to open and close.

If you are going to fix it yourself either buy all the items in one go, list below, or but a fully assembled digitizer and frame with the clips and all as it is available these days from some places.

List of items to buy:
Digitizer
Frame
Nuts
Clips
Digitizer adhesive strips
T4 screw driver
Metal opening tool (expensive but worth it)

I hope you will have a quicker and easier fixing experience then i did after reading this.

Good luck

First and fore most i want to thank the organizers and the participants for an inspiring and motivating day.
I have arrived late to the event and only was through the second half of the day but got very good presenters and some interesting people who have put their heart and information out for the others to comment and help out.
The day was great and i dont want to restate the info already typed here, and if you were in the Startup BarCamp you are welcomed to put your notes up the wki page.
What i want to reffer to was my suggestion to the next Startup BarCamp.
The question asked was what do you want to have in the next Startup BarCamp, a predefined agenda or in the tradition of BarCamps a fluid on the spot agenda.
My suggestion was to make it a semi fluid agenda holding spots for subjects and letting presenters present in a fluid manner inside the time slots i.e.

10:00am-11:00pm Investor Relations

10:00am-11:00pm Idea growing

12:00pm-1:00pm Lunch

1:00pm-3:00pm How we did it

etc.

This will give the people a more coherent way of knowing what to attend and when to wake up.
But i am now thinking that bar camp with all the intensity and fluidity needs to stay fully fluid.
The best example was the Pitch Your Idea session that took more time then most of the presos and was helpful to every one in the room.
So what is your take on this?

My First HTML 5 page

I have started mocking around with the new HTML 5 tags and behaviors.
The sample is available here.
It is based on the sample from Laurent i just did some changes and added the video to one of the boxes.
Things that are nice to know is the dragOver(ev) function and the way it controls the boxes ability to be dropped.

function dragOver(ev) {
    var idelt = ev.dataTransfer.getData("Text");
    var id = ev.target.getAttribute('id');
//Allows the boxes to be dropped at any
    if( (id =='box2' || id =='box1') && (idelt == 'drag' || idelt=='drag2'))
        return false;
//deny the purple video box to move to the center box
    else if(( id =='box3' && idelt == 'drag3') || ( id =='box1' && idelt == 'drag3'))
        return false;
    else
        return true;
}

To get the example to work you need firefox 3.5 because of the video format as OGG.
Some people predict that the HTML 5 will replace entirely the Flash/SilverLight, and i read some people trying to analyze the statement.
So i will add my 2 cents to the pile.
The HTML 5 will not be a full replacement to the Flash/SilverLight solutions from a couple of reasons that are not obvious.
1. its not capable enough to fully replace the replace the Flash/SilverLight in all scenarios and will probably be replacement in some due to its simplicity.
2. The code is exposed and thus pose an IP threat to the code making the websites capability exposed to copycats.
there are some obvious ones that are been put in this post by Paul Krill
So what will be in the future of HTML? my guess is that it will not replace the Flash/SilverLight but mearly change the landscape making it easier to present rich content without Flash/SilverLight but wont take their place as application frameworks for more complex solutions.
The implementation is nice but a bit lacking for my taste may be with HTML 6 or 7 we might see the better result aimed for this one.

Microsoft Songsmith the new Mix

OMG? is that a decent reaction?
Apparently we are bound to hear more musical atrocities like this one for sure.

The source of this atrocity is Microsoft and their lovely research labs. this recent creation called SongSmith is one to be blamed for the next wave of annoying videos polluting your email.
One thing that i can say about the video is that it emphasizes the vocal abilities of Dave Bickler.
I wonder if wikipedia will update the parody list to include this one?
The commercial of this alleged product is very annoying but it does get the point through in 4 minutes and a tad. the problems depicted in videogum are obviously ruining the product.

But with all the bad reviews that are over the internet i believe this product will be successful and i quote Ruth Brown’s post

These days, the Internet has developed into a cruel and ruthless beast. Like a world-wide school yard, Internet users will latch on to a joke, failure or weakness, and tease, ridicule and beat it well and truly into submission.

This is so true that the internet will pound this software till every body knows about it and probably tests it.
I know the application sucks with the sound quality and makes you sound funny especially when you are de-tuned but that is all the fun isn’t it?
The rest of Ruth’s post looks like it agrees with my theory and sees the meme’s that are growing out of it. like making a song from a familiar song as we seen above.
but in any case i have to say “Microsoft you are lame and geeky! use the force!”
One thing Ruth though misses, in the internet there are no wrong reasons! its making Microsoft look like Microsoft.

It’s a double-edged sword for Microsoft — on the one hand, the product is getting loads of attention; on the other, it’s not really for the right reasons.

The alternative product that comes to mind is the Garrage Band from Apple and a quick look gives the impression that Microsoft were aiming for some of its functionality.
But were they really? i believe not. that is a totally different application that bare only resemblance because of its field.
So will you be using SongSmith to make your bands music?

Steve looks like a very nice toy to run through and looks interesting enough to buy a ticket and get to the next burning man.

Steve is a large scale, interactive, collaborative installation

but what is the collaboration effort needed to make Steve work? and what value do we expect to get out of the experiment?
I am sorry to say that i see no value in the effort of making this funny looking exhibition. there will be probably a great fun involved in making it play good and there will be interesting pieces to be played, but beyond that fact Steve could be in a museum and not in burning man, what social value does it hold/represent?
it seems like the builders taken the wrong approach to it

these collaborations become their own persistent meta-beings, meta-beings comprised of both biological and technological parts.

Sorry guys but running naked, and probably high, through a robot that makes sound, and may be lights, based on my position is not the evolution outside of biological boundaries, but the celebration of them, with the laser sensors pointing at my physical boundaries.

May be we can make Steve create content in a content system based on peoples motions and movement generating a website out of those motions. wait that is exactly what i am doing now. using motions to put words into the machine. so we are extending our biological boundaries as we communicate over the internet. and we collaborate in many social networks that usually enhance our individuality and combines us in the social fabric of the world as nodes.

There is no novelty in Steve and he is not to my opinion extends the experience of the social creation beyond its current boundaries.

I would envisioned a much more interesting learning and implementing machine, that begins with interaction with the humans and then continues the cycle quoting humans and extending their impressions, making their interaction with the machine a part of the machines memory and make the machine create its own memories.

The most appropriate project that was done by ubergeek is the Disruption Array and it was situated in a museum which is in my opinion the place to put Steve in.

It appears that i am not going to buy a ticket to this years burning man so i will not meet Steve and get disappointed.
